Description
The Electric Lineworker Apprentice Internship position is an entry-level position focused on hands-on learning. The Apprentice will assist with electric restoration, installation, and construction of underground/overhead electrical lines. The employee will learn and practice to prepare for a future career in linework. Work involves assisting in constructing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, preparing material for lineworkers and line supervisors, operating equipment, and performing various other tasks as a crew member, including construction, maintenance, and extending electric lines.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the supervision of a Line Supervisor or a Lineworker and may be performed under adverse weather conditions. Work is reviewed closely for understanding, accuracy, completeness, and adherence to policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK
The Apprentice will assist in the installation of transformers, arrestors, reclosers, switches, fuses, capacitors, street light cables, and electric poles; installation of underground electrical distribution cables and overhead lines; construction and installation of pedestals and other distribution equipment; repairing of failed electrical equipment; climbing of wood and steel poles and other elevated structures; operation of bucket and digger trucks, trenching machines, backhoes, forklifts, cable locating, and other equipment; operation of power and hand tools.
May perform groundwork, including preparing material for Lineworkers and/or Supervisors and stocking trucks with necessary supplies and equipment.
Cleans and maintains trucks and equipment.
Completes required reports and documentation for material use and equipment
maintenance.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Enrollment in high school and any equivalent combination of training and experience
which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
General knowledge of occupational hazards and workplace safety practices.
Basic knowledge of the safe and correct use of tools.
Interest in learning to climb poles and assisting in performing maintenance on
electric lines.
Ability to work under extreme weather conditions.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including pole climbing.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
Ability to properly use a variety of line tools.
Ability to operate tools and heavy equipment used in electrical distribution installation, maintenance, and repair operations.
Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Some knowledge of electrical theory.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver's license.
