Kaytee is growing and we are currently looking to add a 1st Shift Maintenance Mechanic Youth Apprentice to our team. The Maintenance Mechanic Youth Apprentice is responsible for the maintenance and repair of equipment, ensuring all machinery operates safely and efficiently. This role involves the use of a variety of tools, diagnostic equipment, and techniques, with a strong emphasis on safety and adherence to industry standards. The position is designed to be flexible, with the opportunity for growth through a youth apprenticeship program. At Kaytee, you have the opportunity to work with products for birds, hamsters, rabbits, and other small animals. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Tool Selection and Operation
o Select and operate appropriate hand tools, light-duty power tools, and stationary tools safely.
o Use fasteners correctly and safely handle and store oils, grease, chemicals, cleaners, and solvents according to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
o Test, maintain, and repair engines and agricultural equipment.
o Perform pre-inspection of equipment components and set up machinery.
o Retrieve diagnostic trouble codes, check fluid levels, and lubricate machinery.
•Hydraulics and Electronics
o Interpret hydraulic symbols and flow on schematic drawings.
o Maintain, repair, and inspect hydraulic systems and components.
o Interpret electrical symbols and wiring schematics.
o Apply basic electrical theory for the maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic components.
•Documentation and Diagnostics
o Complete written documentation of work performed and parts used.
o Look up parts and use specific diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
o Calibrate and monitor equipment and dismantle/reassemble defective machines.
QUALIFICATIONS
•Education and Experience
•Enrollment in or completion of a youth apprenticeship program in Mechanics.
•Basic understanding of tool operation, engine maintenance, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
•Ability to safely operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment.
•Competence in reading and interpreting technical diagrams and schematics.
•Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
•Additional Qualifications (Optional)
•Completion of Level One or Two of the youth apprenticeship program, with additional competencies in advanced areas such as data acquisition systems or specialized diagnostic tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
o The role requires standing, lifting, and handling heavy tools and machinery.
o Regular exposure to chemicals, oils, and potentially hazardous materials, with safety gear provided.
o The position is typically based in a workshop or field setting, requiring adherence to safety protocols at all times.
o Flexible work schedule depending on the season and operational needs.
