OVERVIEW
The largest number of carpenters are in construction (compared to maintenance, remodeling, etc.). These are “do-all” craftsmen skilled in “rough” work (residential framing, concrete form building) and in “finish” work (installing cabinets and hanging doors).
Carpenters can devote their careers to specialty or general work, depending upon personal preferences and abilities. They can work at rough framing, forming, decking, roofing, precision layout with blueprints and instruments, or finishing, such as installing stairways, trimming, windows and doors. Another option is interior systems work (acoustical ceilings, metal studs/drywall, access floor systems, etc.). There are many types of construction to choose from e.g., housing, office buildings, factories, warehouses, theaters and shopping centers.
Carpenters share hard, satisfying, physical work, often out of doors. For those who want to travel, carpentry skills offer an opportunity to go to many different areas of the nation and world. The carpenters, in such cases, obtain “clearance” from their local union into the local union in the area to which they move. Additionally, carpenters are employed in today’s shipyards building ways, making repairs, doing trim work and other tasks. Jobs are also available in highway construction and bridge building.
Many carpenters find work in remodeling and maintenance. Large industrial plants have either full-time people to perform repair and maintenance or contractual arrangements with outside firms.
