Part Time Spring Engineering Internship
This position offers qualified students the opportunity to perform engineering work in Duke Energy Carolinas Transmission Planning. The Transmission Planning group performs power system studies and sponsor projects for reliable expansion of electric transmission system.
Engineering interns will work alongside staff engineers in this group to support them with work which could include power flow studies, modeling, and programming.
Responsibilities
•Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise
•Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees
•Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems
•Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity
•Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures
•Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
•Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Basic Qualifications
•Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree or graduate program concentrating in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
•Class status as a Senior
•Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
Desired Qualifications
•Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
•Experience in performing power flow and generator interconnection studies.
•Experience using power flow and dynamics analysis tools
•Programming experience in areas such as Python, batch files, Visual Basic
•Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications (CAD tools, MFAD, STAAD Pro, MatLab, PSS/E, PowerWorld)
•Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
•Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
•Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
•Good written and oral communication skills
•Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
•Understanding of basic principles of project management
•Experience in the utility industry.
Specific Requirements
•Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate footwear and clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed
•Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs
Working Conditions
•Part time during business hours
•Must live within 50mi of Duke Energy Plaza
•Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility.
•Must pass a background check and drug screening to be eligible for hire
